The MSc program in Surgery offers speciality training programs in Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology and Developmental Radiotherapeutics, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. Faculty and students are located in our affiliated hospitals including Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre, St. Paul's Hospital, B.C. Children's Hospital, Royal Columbian Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, the University Hospital of Northern BC, Nanaimo Regional Hospital, and the British Columbia Cancer Agency.

Minimum Admission Requirements to the program include:

  • Securing Prospective Supervisor: Applicants must find a Department of Surgery faculty member willing to be your supervisor.
  • MD Degree: an M.D. degree or equivalent
  • Minimum B+ GPA: B+ or greater in the last two years of medical school

The following documentation is required in support of an application

  • Submit Online Application: Completed graduate studies application form submitted online with fees paid.
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions. View program website for specific submission instructions.
  • Three (3) Reference Letters: References from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications.

The Graduate Certificate in Global Surgical Care (GCGSC) is designed to meet the growing need for professional development of students interested in focusing on the global health problem of the burden of unmet surgical care. The program is intended for surgical care clinicians, trainees in surgical care disciplines, allied health care professionals or trainees involved, or who wish to be involved, in global surgical care programs. The courses are delivered entirely online (no classes on campus or summer residences). They are designed to allow practicing health professionals to continue their studies with minimal disruption to their work.

The UBC Clinician Investigator Program (CIP) is designed to provide a combined research and clinical training stream for residents in Clinical Specialty Programs at UBC. The aim is to encourage young physicians to pursue careers as clinician-scientists and to renew the clinical academic faculty at UBC and other Canadian Medical Schools. It is an opportunity for UBC residents to pursue Master, PhD or postgraduate studies through a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) accredited program.
