The BSc program in Pharmacology emphasizes the experimental and laboratory aspects of Pharmacology. Students learn both the whole animal and isolated tissue techniques as well as biochemical and chemical procedures. Skills that are stressed include the ability to search for information, design appropriate experiments, carry out experiments individually and as a member of a team, analyze data and, communicate and write effectively.

  • Complete Prerequisite Courses: Complete Year 1 and Year 2 Required courses for Major (0311): Pharmacology (PCTH).
  • Apply to Specialization: Admission to the B.Sc. and B.Sc. Co-op program is by application to the Department before March prior to Year 3.
  • Attend Interview: If you meet all requirements for the B.Sc. Program (see the UBC Calendar for required 1st and 2nd year courses) and have >75% average in the first year, arrange for an interview with the department’s undergraduate adviser.

The undergraduate online application for UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses opens in mid August and closes in mid January. Admissions decisions for most programs are made in April or early May.

Please note that some programs may accept complete application packages submitted after the posted deadline date or may have other program specific dates and deadlines.

The Graduate Programs in Pharmacology focuses on the research of neural, cardiovascular, respiratory and clinical pharmacology as well as drug development. Faculty research interests include anesthesiology, pharmacology and therapeutics, which allows students to gain broad-based exposure to fundamental as well as medically-related aspects of drug research.

The minimum admission requirements for the MSc program include:

  • Background in pharmacology or closely related subjects: Applicants must have a background in Pharmacology. Students with a science background but are not exposed to pharmacology are required to take, in their first year of graduate study, an undergraduate pharmacology course offered by the department.
